A new year is a good time to say peace out to the things that no longer serve you and get into the groove with some healthy new habits. When it comes to making lasting change in any part of your life — from eating healthy to fitness or even self-love and relationships — consistency is the key to success. And unfortunately, too many resolutions fall by the wayside before you can start to see any real progress.
One trick we’re trying in 2020 is adding a new habit to an already existing habit. That way you’re not tacking a whole other thing onto your to-do list, but rather making good use of the time and routines that you already have. Read on for some ideas that are working for us, and five ideas for new habits to try in 2020.
1. Meditate while you wait for your coffee to brew
Start small. But start. Try a meditation app like Calm or Headspace and commit to five minutes a day to see improvements in mood, cognition, stress levels and sleep. Because you only need a few minutes to see results, we love to carve out meditation time before the shower, or even while we’re waiting for the coffee to brew.
2. Jot down meal ideas for the week ahead
We like to take a glass half full approach to eating well. Rather than thinking about what we can’t eat, or restricting, it feels more positive to focus on adding more healthful, nourishing foods to our daily diet. One habit worth trying is taking time on Sunday nights (like while you’re doing a sheet mask) to jot down meal ideas for the week ahead. That way you’re not dealing with the question of what to eat when you’re already feeling hangry after a long workday.
3. Combine your workout with your favorite podcast
Go ahead and take advantage of those new year’s fitness promos if you’re interested in trying something new! Group classes or joining a running group are a great way to build community and accountability, which are both super helpful when trying to establish a new habit. Home workouts are great too, and let you combine fitness with another just-for-you activity like catching up on your favorite podcast.
4. Every time you find yourself scrolling through social media, call or text a friend
Making time for friends is so important — and yet it’s one of the first things to go when life gets busy. Did you know spending time with supportive pals can reduce anxiety and help you feel more present? Challenge yourself to pick up the phone more and schedule more face-to-face friend time. In the new year, keep yourself accountable by calling or texting a friend every time you find yourself in a Facebook or Instagram trance. It’ll feel more intentional and help you build deeper relationships.
5. Enrich your daily routine with Rae
Self-love is built through small acts, every single day. It could be a cup of tea, a skincare routine or making time to journal every night. It’s the little things we do, not because we have to, but because they feel good. We like to enrich our existing morning and night routines with Rae supplements. You might try adding Hydration Drops to your morning smoothie, or adding Beauty Drops to a big glass of water after coffee. After a week or so, the new routine will start to feel seamless — less something that you have to remember to do and more just something you do, like adding milk to coffee or flossing after brushing.
